Why I Believe it is Necessary for Mexicans to Say the N-Word
As a Mexican-American, I have grown up hearing and using the n-word in my everyday language. However, I also understand the history and weight behind this word and why it is considered offensive to many.
Firstly, it is important to acknowledge that the use of the n-word by any race is problematic and should not be condoned. However, within the Latino community, there exists a complex relationship with this word. Many Mexicans have African ancestry and have faced similar forms of discrimination and oppression as Black individuals in America. Therefore, it can be argued that Mexicans have some level of shared experience with Black individuals and their struggle against systemic racism.
Furthermore, language is fluid and ever-changing. The use of the n-word has evolved over time and has been reclaimed by some Black individuals as a term of endearment or solidarity within their community. Similarly, many Latinos have taken ownership of this word and use it in a non-derogatory manner amongst themselves.
Moreover, censoring certain words only gives them more power. By completely banning the use of the n-word, we are giving it more weight than necessary. It becomes a forbidden fruit that only fuels its allure
